120 mph wrong-way chase ends with scared fleeing suspect hiding in bushes

A man was taken into custody Wednesday following a dangerous high-speed chase through the South Bay. Officials said they did not know why the man eluded them, but a CHP officer said he told them he "was scared." The chase began around 1 p.m. when the man failed to pull over for a traffic stop. The unidentified 23-year-old, who was driving a blue Chrysler Sebring, began driving dangerously on southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near J Street in Chula Vista, police said. The pursuit then went onto side streets around Dairy Mart Road and Camino De La Plaza. The driver then re-entered I-5 south, and made an immediate U-turn, and began traveling north in southbound lanes. The CHP stopped following the Sebring, but the police helicopter, ABLE, continued to monitor the pursuit from above. CHP said at times, the driver reached speeds of 120 mph. The man made a second U-turn and began to exit near Tocayo Avenue in Nestor. He ran from the car into a nearby apartment complex located in the 1500 block of Oro Vista Road. Authorities found the driver hiding in some bushes around 1:24 p.m. and took him into custody. His name was not released.
